How much less must you eat to lose one pound?

Let’s face it, you went overboard on Thanksgiving dinner and your calendar is booked with upcoming holiday parties and social gatherings filled with more food and drink.  In the 30 to 40 day period at the end of the year, we indulge way more than we should.  We also exercise less during the winter than during the long days of summer because we’re confined to the house instead of enjoying outdoor activities.

Fact:  If you eat more food than your body burns up, you gain weight.

Fact:  If you eat less food than your body burns, you lose weight.

Burning Question:  How much less must you eat to lose one pound?

Answer:  3500 calories.

Imagine this, if your weight is currently stable (neither up or down), by cutting 100 calories from your diet each day you’d lose one pound in about 35 days.  So by eliminating that 100 calorie snack you have everyday, that’s equal to 12 pounds a year.

If you cut 250 calories a day, you’ll lose one pound in about two weeks.

If you cut 500 calories a day, you’ll lost about one pound a week.

Of course, the opposite is also true.  Increase your caloric intake by 100 calories and you’ll be 12 pounds heavier in a year.
